Danno, I like IGN’s reviews, but I took your advice and went out looking for other reviews. GameZone aggregates ratings from other sources, including IGN, so you can compare. Gotta say, Xbox 360 still doesn’t look that inspiring. You’ve got titles where the reviews are all over the map (like Gun which gets a 6.4 from one place and a 9.0 from another). Most of them score in the 7.5-8.5 range when you factor in multiple review sources. That is respectable, to be sure. But am I going to drop $400 on a new system to play merely respectable games?
Honestly? Yeah, I think that’s probablly a good way to think about it.
Do you ONLY ever play the most phenomenal games when you get a system or do you play games that, while maybe not going down in the history books as the classics of gaming, provide an enjoyable experience for their time?
I dunno, there are several franchises in the launch window that I’m highly invested in, so my opinions are probablly skewed (the Project Gotham games are some of the few racing games I enjoy, the original Amped being my favorite snowboard game ever, DOA4 being designed by Itagaki, and, I mean, of course Halo 3 at some point). And I’m also into the community features of Live, so that puts extra bias on me.
PS: Just finished GUN for the regular XBox. It was a great game, little short on Normal difficulty, though I did plow through it, I get the impression that the shortcomings mostly have to do with the assets being targeted towards current generation consoles as opposed to the 360. If you’ve got an XBox and a free weekend, it’s a definitly worthy of a rental.
